It's spring. It's already heating up. And I am obsessed with what that means for the next few months.
Because here's the thing about shooting in the water , it cannot be staged. You cannot suck it in, angle your good side, or hold a stiff little half-smile for eight seconds while someone counts down.
The second you're in the water, all of that armour just… dissolves. Your kid stops performing for the camera because they're too busy trying not to swallow half the pool or get knocked over by a wave. You stop worrying about how you look because you're laughing too hard at the chaos happening two feet in front of you.
That's the photo I'm after. Not the one where everyone's lined up smiling on command.
I love the ones like where your husband's mid splash, your toddler's shrieking, and you, you look like you're actually in your life, not performing it for a camera or the gram right ..
I've watched so many families walk into a session bracing for the usual drill. The line up. The "everyone look here." The slow unravelling of patience as a two year old refuses to cooperate for the tenth time. And then we get in the water, and something shifts. Nobody's managing anyone anymore and the fun and lightness comes out ..
Spring and Summer on the Gold Coast and across Byron Bay gives us exactly the conditions to make this work, warm enough to actually enjoy being in there, soft golden light and gosh we are so spoilt for where we can shoot and play.
And this isn't only for families with little kids splashing around. It's for the bump you're growing right now, floating weightless in a way you'll never feel on land again. It's for the mum who wants proof she was more than "on duty" this season , that she was in the water too, laughing, present, real. Your kids will have a thousand photos of their childhood. Here's how it goes on the day: a quick chat beforehand so nobody's walking in blind, a location that actually suits your family, a pool, a quiet stretch of beach, somewhere across Byron Bay, the Tweed or the Gold Coast that means something to you and then I direct, you play, and the real stuff happens in between the moments I'm technically "taking a photo."
